Case Study | Hamurana Lodge, New Zealand

Over the past year our lodge has incorporated numerous practices to become an environmentally friendly hotel. We train our staff to be more aware of environmental issues and we will continue to strive for the best management practices to sustain our environment. Our accomplishments over the past year are as follows:

1 - Cultural/Social

• Created our own organic vegetables and herbs gardens 

• Planted native and exotic species to attract New Zealand native nectar feeders (e.g. Tui & Bellbirds). Native berries trees are also a food source for our native pigeon, the Kereru

• Undertake active control of non-native animal pests (possums & magpies) that threaten our native forests and native birds

• Participated at the Rotorua night market showcasing the importance of growing own gardens 

• Carefully sourced from local independent producers, while keeping our food miles super-low. In fact, 100% of our fresh produce comes from the region

• All menus are designed with seasonal cuisine in mind

• Try our jams, chutneys, cakes and biscuits - they're all home-made too

• Organised kids cooking classes with visit of the garden and the animals

• Supporting the local Ronald McDonald House through kids cooking classes and charity diners

• Other donations to local charities: Hamurana Play Center and Hamurana Springs Association 

• Sponsored Body Positive Association based in Auckland

• Buying bio-degradable plastic bags and disposables utensils made from corn

• Owner's field trip to Bali to support to our orphanage
